The Great Fishing Miracle (Luke 5:1–11)

Context

Jesus is teaching crowds by the Lake of Gennesaret (Sea of Galilee).
Simon Peter, James, and John (sons of Zebedee) are washing nets after a fruitless night of fishing.

The Miracle (Key Details)

Jesus gets into Simon’s boat and asks him to push out a little from shore so He can teach the crowds from the boat (v. 3).
After teaching, Jesus tells Simon: “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” (v. 4)
Simon’s honest reply: “Master, we have toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” (v. 5) — a key moment of reluctant obedience/faith.

The Catch:

They let down the nets → a great number of fish so that the nets were breaking.
They signal to their partners (James and John in the other boat) for help.
Both boats are filled so that they began to sink (v. 7) — an overwhelming, miraculous abundance.

The Response

Simon Peter falls at Jesus’ knees: “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!” (v. 8) — overwhelmed by Jesus’ holiness and power.
All were astonished (including James and John).
Jesus reassures: “Do not be afraid. From now on you will be catching men.” (v. 10).

Outcome

They forsook all (boats, nets, catch) and followed Him (v. 11).
This becomes their call to full-time discipleship as “fishers of men.”

Spiritual Lessons (from the sermon)

Even experts (professional fishermen) can toil all night with nothing — but one word from Jesus changes everything.
Obedience to Christ’s word (even when it seems illogical) leads to abundance.
Encountering Jesus’ power produces holy awe and repentance (“I am a sinful man”).
Jesus transforms our ordinary work/skills into kingdom purpose (fishermen → fishers of men).
True discipleship involves forsaking all to follow Him.

Comparison Note

Similar miracle in John 21 (post-resurrection) also involves a great catch after a fruitless night, confirming the call and restoring Peter.

These details highlight the miraculous scale (nets breaking, boats sinking) and the personal transformation of the disciples. The miracle demonstrates Jesus’ authority over creation and His ability to provide abundantly when we obey His word.

Missionary Presentation — Grace and Life Bible Community (Tunja, Colombia)

Overview & Background

• Speaker: Daniel (physicist, PhD in theoretical physics) with wife and children, serving in Tunja (2–3 hours from Bogotá).

• Assembly started as a Friday night Bible study in their home (Nov 2013) → grew into a full church.

• Vision: Glorify God, make disciples, plant churches, and reach the lost in a context where charismatic/pentecostal influences dominate and biblical teaching is often weak.
