Weekly Sermon Insights: Lord Jesus/Jesus is Lord

"Lord Jesus" should become like one inseparable word in our thinking and speech!

February 22, 2026

Paul Johnson

Message Notes

Main Theme / Title

  • The Name of the Lord — specifically “Lord Jesus” or “Jesus is Lord”.

  • Emphasizes acknowledging Jesus’ lordship as central to Christian faith, salvation, and daily life.

  • “Lord Jesus” should become like one inseparable word in our thinking and speech.

Key Scripture: Romans 10:9–10, 13 (The “Roman Road”)

  • Romans 10:9 — “if you confess with your mouth [Jesus as / the Lord Jesus / Jesus is Lord], and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.”

    • Variations in translations noted (e.g., “Jesus as Lord,” “Jesus is Lord,” “the Lord Jesus”).

  • Romans 10:10 — Heart belief → righteousness; mouth confession → salvation.

  • Romans 10:13 — “Whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved” (quotes Joel 2:32).

    • Context: Not magical power in the name alone → tied to belief, hearing the word, preaching, and true submission.

    • Danger of taking v. 13 out of context (e.g., treating it as a formula without faith).

  • Full context (vv. 14–17): Salvation requires hearing → believing → calling → preachers sent → word of Christ.

Significance of “Lord Jesus” Title

  • Appears 118 times in the New Testament.

  • In the Gospels: Only onceLuke 24:3 (“the body of the Lord Jesus”) — after the resurrection.

    • Key insight: Full realization of Jesus as Lord comes after He conquered sin, death, and hell.

    • Before resurrection: Many titles used, but “Lord Jesus” reaches fullest impact post-resurrection.

  • Incomplete to say “Jesus” without owning Him as Lord.

  • Lord (Greek: Kyrios) = Master, sovereign — not conditional on our acknowledgment.

    • Jesus is Lord objectively, whether we recognize it or not.

Theological Points on Salvation & Lordship

  • Debate (historical): Augustine (salvation by grace alone, no works) vs. Pelagius (turn from sin + obey to be saved).

    • True faith leads to submission to Christ’s lordship as end result (not prerequisite steps for salvation).

  • Two truths:

    1. Jesus is Lord regardless of our acknowledgment.

    2. No Christian perfectly submits to His lordship (1 John 1:10 — all sin).

  • Salvation: Believe He is God, died, rose again → call on His name (faith, not works).

    • Confession of “Jesus is Lord” flows from genuine belief.

  • Not “Lordship Salvation” (must submit perfectly to be saved) — but true believers acknowledge and grow in submission.

Illustrations & Stories

  • Rick Cole’s mother (Alzheimer’s decline): In final stages, only said three words — “love,” “Lord Jesus”, “body.”

    • “Lord Jesus” became one indivisible word → spoke volumes about deepest reality.

  • Thief on the cross (humorous YouTube reference): Saved by simple trust in Jesus’ promise — no theology, sanctification, etc., needed.

    • Shows power in trusting the Savior (who is Lord).

How the Name of the Lord is Glorified / Proclaimed

  • 1 Thessalonians 1:5–10 — Early believers became examples; faith spread, turned from idols to serve living God → proclaimed the name through life, joy amid tribulation.

  • Acts 4:32–37 — Early church unity, generosity, witness to resurrection of Lord Jesus → abundant grace, no needy among them (Barnabas example).

  • Colossians 3:17 — “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks…”

  • 1 Corinthians 11:23–26 — Lord’s Supper proclaims the Lord’s death until He comes → pass on the message.

  • 1 Timothy 6:13–16 — Charge to keep commandments until appearing of Lord Jesus Christ → King of kings, Lord of lords.

  • 1 Timothy 3:16 — Mystery of godliness: Proclaimed among nations, believed on in the world.

Applications / Challenges

  • Make “Lord Jesus” one word in our hearts/minds — central figure in life.

  • Walk worthy of God (1 Thess. 2:12) — glorify Him through life, work, perseverance, love.

  • Proclaim Him: Through suffering, faith, sharing the gospel, daily actions.

  • Personal question: Is Jesus Lord in your life? (Like old bumper sticker idea: “Jesus Lord over Salina” → but more importantly, in me.)

  • Tell others, encourage, pass on the message of Lord Jesus.

Closing Prayer Emphasis

  • Thanks for Lord Jesus Christ — His death, resurrection, exclusive way to heaven.

  • Guide us to tell others.

  • focus on confessing Jesus as Lord as essential to salvation (by grace through faith), post-resurrection realization of His lordship, and living/proclaiming that lordship daily.
