Study Notes: Jesus Heals the Official’s Son (John 4:43–54)

Main Theme

Jesus performs His second sign in Galilee (after turning water into wine).
Emphasis on faith in Jesus’ word (even without physical presence or visible signs).
Contrast between the Samaritans (believed by hearing) and the Galileans (wanted signs).

Context

After two days in Samaria (where many believed because of His word), Jesus returns to Galilee.
Note: “A prophet has no honor in his own country” (v. 44) — the Galileans welcomed Him because they had seen His signs in Jerusalem, but their faith was often superficial (signs-based).

The Healing of the Royal Official’s Son (vv. 46–54)

A royal official (likely a Jewish officer serving under Herod Antipas) had a son near death in Capernaum (~15–20 miles away).
He begged Jesus: “Come down before my child dies!” (v. 49).
Jesus’ response: “Go, your son will live.” (v. 50) — no dramatic show, no journey to the house.
The man’s response: “The man took Jesus at his word and departed.”
- This is the key moment of faith.
Confirmation: Servants met him on the way with news that the fever left at the exact hour Jesus spoke (“Yesterday at the seventh hour” — 1 p.m.).
Result: The official and his whole household believed.

Key Lessons & Contrasts

Faith in the Word:
- Samaritans (John 4:39–42): Believed because of Jesus’ words (“Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did”). No signs needed.
- Galileans: Often required signs and wonders (v. 48).
- The official: Chose to believe Jesus’ spoken word and acted on it (“Go”).
Jesus’ power: One word from Him is enough — distance is no obstacle.
Personal application: When Jesus says “Go” or gives a promise, will we trust and obey?

Supporting Scriptures & Illustrations

Romans 10:16–17 — Faith comes by hearing the word of God.
The preacher shared a personal story of his daughter’s spinal meningitis at ~18 months old — doctors said another day might have left her a “vegetable,” but prayer and medical care led to full recovery.
Challenge: Do we beg for visible signs, or take Jesus at His word?

Applications

Jesus meets people in their desperation (a father fearing the loss of his son).
True faith acts on Christ’s word even before seeing results.
God can use our crises to bring whole households to belief.
We are called to trust Jesus’ promises today (salvation, provision, healing, guidance) without demanding signs.

Prayer that we would believe and act on what Jesus says, just as the official did.
