1 John 2:18–21 — The Last Hour & Antichrists

“It is the last hour” — the church age, characterized by the rise of many antichrists.
Antichrist (used only by John):
- Opposes Christ (“anti” = against or instead of).
- False teachers who once associated with the church but were never truly part of it (“They went out from us, but they were not of us” v. 19).
- Their departure reveals their true nature.
True believers have been anointed by the Holy One (Holy Spirit) and possess knowledge of the truth (v. 20).

1 John 2:22–23 — Nature of Heresy

Core mark of an antichrist: Denies that Jesus is the Christ (denying the Father and the Son).
Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.

1 John 2:24–29 — Safeguards Against Heresy

Abide in the apostolic teaching (“what you heard from the beginning” v. 24) — the true gospel.
The Holy Spirit’s anointing (v. 27) — teaches truth, provides discernment; no need for deceptive human teachers.
Abide in Christ — leads to confidence at His appearing (v. 28) and practicing righteousness (v. 29).

Test the spirits — not every spirit is from God.
Spirit of God confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh.
Spirit of antichrist denies this.

Practical Applications & Warnings

False teachers often start within the church but depart when their error is challenged.

Modern parallels: Prosperity gospel, certain nationalist movements blending politics with a “corporate salvation,” cults (Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses).
Safeguards in practice:
- Immerse in Scripture.
- Rely on the Holy Spirit for discernment.
- Stay in fellowship with true believers.
- Test all teachings against the apostolic gospel.
Knowing doctrine protects against deception; superficial faith leaves one exposed.
